Bat Glossary

Beneficial - of benefit, good, helpful, useful

Chiroptera - an order of mammals, specifically bats

Conserve - to save something, so that we can enjoy it now and later

Echolocate - locating by listening to echoes

Ecosystem - community of animals, plants, and their surroundings

Emerge - to come out

Emergence - a coming out, usually a large or important group

Endangered - in danger of becoming extinct

Endemic - (en-DEM-ik) found only in a certain area or country

Exclusion - to shut out, evict

Habitat - the natural area where a species lives and can find what it needs to survive

Hibernate - to pass the winter sleeping or in a dormant state

Insectivore - an animal that eats insects

Guano - droppings from bats; often used as fertilizer

Mammal - warm-blooded animal that gives birth to live infants and nurses its young

Migrate - to move from one place to another with the change of seasons

Nectar - sweet liquid found inside many flowers

Nocturnal - active during the night

Noseleaf - a thin bit of skin on the nose of a bat, used like a small satellite dish to direct echolocation sounds and receive echoes.

Pollinator - an animal or insect that transfers pollen from one flower to another

Potential - something that can, but has not yet, come into being; possible

Predator - an animal that preys on other animals or insects

Species - a particular kind of plant or animal; all members of a species share certain characteristics and are known by a specific name. A subspecies is a division of a species.

Vertebrate - any animal with a backbone
