Earth Day 5K Fun Run Results
Earth Day 5K Fun Run a truly green affair
George Town, 30 April 2012 – Earth Day 2012 dawned rainy and stormy signalling what could have been the wettest Earth Day 5k Fun Run yet, but with a nod from Mother Nature the skies cleared just in time making for a great time had by all.
“We appreciate all those who came out to support the Trust at this annual event, which once again was generously sponsored by PwC,” said Trust Chair Carla Reid “And we couldn’t have done it without our dedicated volunteers who kept things running so smoothly.”
Of the many determined participants who were set to brave the elements, the day’s top finishers were Marius Acker in the men’s category with a time of 17.49 and Emily Davies in the women’s who arrived in 20.08. Marking the “Every Day is Earth Day” theme, the top three male and female runners received trophies made from recycled bottles, and the event featured many green elements including plant-based biodegradable water bottles and cups, paperless registration, and recycled art.
“Many thanks to our prize sponsors Cayman Airways, Hibiscus Spa, Havianas, Premier Wines and Spirits, Sea Elements, Foster’s BayMarket, Cayman Helicopters and Paperman’s coffeehouse,” said Trust General Manager Christina McTaggart.
For the first time, the fun run organizers held an aluminium can drive in conjunction with the run over the week leading up to Earth Day.
“We wanted this year’s Fun Run participants to have an easy but meaningful way to have a positive impact on our environment, and we had such a great response,” said Angilynn Baraud, PwC’s Assurance and Business Development Manager.
“So many people including our staff at PwC took up the challenge and we are grateful to the Department Environmental Health who made the can drive possible. We now have a fantastic example of how, if we all do a little, we can change a lot.”
