What are the Historic Preservation Awards?

Since 1987, the National Trust has worked to preserve places of historic significance in the Cayman Islands.  To this end, the Historic Preservation Awards were conceived as a means of honouring excellence in restoration or preservation of heritage buildings, sites, structures, districts or objects significant to Cayman’s heritage.

The purpose of the Awards Programme is to identify restored or preserved resources and to encourage the long-term preservation of significant properties that illustrate or commemorate the history of our Islands.  The Awards recognise and promote the preservation efforts of Government as well as of private organizations and individuals and encourage the owners of historic properties to uphold preservation principals.

Standing for distinction in preservation, the Awards are a reminder that beneath the neglected facades of numerous old properties lie fragments of Cayman’s history that deserve to be rescued and commemorated as opposed to being demolished and forgotten.

Old homes, can with some research, thought and do-it-yourself spirit, be revived as dignified dwellings comfortable for modern-day living, thus providing a useful purpose for today’s society while silently relating a tale of yesteryear.

Old properties speak eloquently of Cayman’s history and their survival is dependent upon the stewardship of people who take as much pride in historical structures as those who originally created them.  Just imagine what our ancestors would say if they were alive today to see their homes standing as magnificently as they did 100 years ago.

Nation-wide Recognition

Each distinctive old property in these Islands is part of a legacy of a people who together cleared a path for today’s Cayman.  The Historic Preservation Awards thus represent major patterns of Cayman’s shared national experience expressed through the built environment.  The National Trust believes strongly that older properties are deserving of a distinguished prominence in our society.  The Historic Preservation Awards are about distinction and recognition.

The Award Process

Anyone interested in nominating a property for an Historic Preservation Award may complete the nomination form in this booklet or download from our website at www.nationaltrust.org.ky or contact the National Trust office to learn how to get started.

It is important to mention that it is perfectly acceptable to nominate properties owned by someone else.

All nominations must be made in writing using the designated form and submitting the required documentation as outlined.  The Trust’s Historic Programmes Manager is available to any individuals requiring assistance with nomination submissions.

All nominations will be examined closely and 3 submissions will be short-listed for each Classification.  The Historic Advisory Committee (HAC) will then visit and inspect each of the short-listed submissions.

Previous recipients are also eligible, but only if they are nominated under a new Classification.

Understanding the Basics

An understanding of two key concepts – Historic Significance and Historic Integrity can help those completing nomination forms.

Historic Significance is the importance of a property to the history, architecture, culture, archaeology, seafaring activities or research/education of the Cayman Islands.  The discussion on Awards Criteria explains more precisely how historic significance is achieved.  Special attention should be paid to the explanation on the nomination form.

Historic Integrity is the authenticity of the property’s historic identity evidenced by the survival of physical characteristics that existed during the property’s historic period.  It is a property’s historic integrity that enables it to illustrate significant aspects of its past.  Historic Integrity is the synthesis of several different qualities including location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association.  Although not all of these qualities need be present in eligible nominations, an overall sense of a time and place past must however be evident.

Gathering information for Nominations

Claims for historic significance and integrity must be supported by fact.  A good understanding of the property will therefore be necessary and will require a working relationship with the owners of the property.

In addition to the awarding component, nomination forms will serve as a permanent record about the property and will be included (if not already so) in the Historic Building and Sites Inventory.
