The walls of Owen Roberts airport were treated to an extra splash of colour this week, courtesy of Cayman’s own Blue Iguana.

Staff of the National Trust, McAlpine LTD and the Civil Aviation Authority joined forces to display a giant-sized piece of Iguana artwork in the “Arrivals area” of the airport. The weighty “Blue Dragon” puzzle was secured in place by a construction team, the services of whom were donated by McAlpine.

“This wonderful piece of artwork will provide a unique and colorful welcome to visitors” said Dr Mat Cottam, Environmental Programmes Manager for the National Trust “…the Blues really are natural diplomats for Cayman and I would like to thank everyone for their help with this worthy project”.

The monster puzzle was constructed at last year’s Art@Governor’s exhibition, as part of the Blue Dragon Partnership between the National Gallery and the National Trust. Airbrush experts, Paul and Tansy, painted the background while local children completed a pledge to “Do Their Piece” to help save the Iguana from extinction. Each pledger received a “Blue Dragon” certificate and the opportunity to paint and decorate a piece of the giant puzzle for themselves. The puzzle contains some fifty pieces in total.

The Blue Dragon Project will build on its many successes over the course of last year, with a new feature at this year’s Art@Governor’s event (31st January) – where children will get the chance to “Lend a Hand” to save the Blue Iguanas in another exciting super-sized arts project.
